Pumpkin Garden

Pumpkin seeds are ideal for planting with small children. The seeds are large enough to be easily handled. Use clear plastic drinking cups and fill half-way with potting soil. Place sunflower seeds on top of the dirt. Take a small shovel and cover with remaining soil. Fill a small watering can with water and sprinkle over the seeds. Cover with a clear wrap to make a small greenhouse. When seedlings are big enough they may be transplanted to a garden.

Child can transplant pumpkin seedling to a raised bed. Fill bed with garden soil. Garden box can be boards or use large rocks for the edge. Plants need a sunny spot. Watch for the pumpkin to flower. From the flower a pumpkin will grow.

Your child can keep a diary of the pumpkin from seed to a final product. The very young child can draw a pictograph of the seed to pumpkin. Older children may use invented spelling to tell their story.
